WORKING VEHICLE FIRE AT TACO BELL

LABOR DAY MORNING WAS INTERRUPTED BY A CALL FOR A VEHICLE FIRE IN THE PARKING LOT OF TACO BELL ON UPPER PEACH STREET.  THE 911 CENTER STARTED RECEIVING CALLS AT 0948 HRS AND WITHIN 5 MIN HAD APPROX 50 CALLS REPORTING A CARGO VAN ON FIRE NEXT TO THE BUILDING AT TACO BELL. E-423 RESPONDED WITH 1 VOLUNTEER AND THE 3 PAID STAFF WHILE E-432 RESPONDED WITH VOLUNTEER STAFF A COUPLE MIN LATER FROM STATION 43.  E-423 ARRIVED ON SCENE AND REPORTED A HEAVILY INVOLVED ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE AND PULLED A PRE-CONNECTED CROSS LAY FOR FIRE ATTACK. E-432 ARRIVED JUST BEHIND AND THEIR MANPOWER ASSISTED THE E-423 CREW.  THE FIRE WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL IN 15 MIN.  SEVERAL TOOLS WERE ABLE TO BE SALVAGED AND REMOVED FROM THE CARGO VAN REAR.  BOTH ENGINES WERE BACK IN SERVICE IN 90 MIN., THERE WAS NO EXTENSION TO THE TACO BELL AND NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THE EVENT.

THE FIRE TRUCKS DID HAVE SOME DIFFICULTY GETTING ON THE SCENE DUE TO A LARGE NUMBER OF RUBBER NECKERS SURROUNDING THE SCENE AND CLOGGING UP THE ROADWAY AS THEY WERE WATCHING THE FIRE AND NOT DRIVING ON THE ROADWAY.
