WHETHER YOU WANT TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONSES, FIRE AND RESCUE OPERATIONS, OR HELP THE COMMUNITY THROUGH FUNDRAISING AND SUPPORT PROJECTS TO KEEP THIS DEPARTMENT AN ONGOING SUCCESS. PERRY HI-WAY IS ONE OF THE BUSIEST VOLUNTEER DEPARTMENTS IN ERIE COUNTY. IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS DEPARTMENT A SUCCESS WE RELY ON LOCAL DONATIONS TO KEEP THE DEPARTMENT RUNNING BUT MOST OF ALL WE RELY ON DEDICATED MEMBERS TO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME AND EFFORT TO TRAIN FOR AND RESPOND TO EMERGENCIES WITHIN THE COUNTY.

COLLEGE STUDENTS, PERRY HI-WAY OFFERS FREE WIRELESS INTERNET AT BOTH STATIONS, ALONG WITH LOUNGES AND AREAS FOR QUIET STUDYING IN BETWEEN EMERGENCY CALLS. PERRY HI-WAY OFFERS FREE TRAINING FOR EMS (EMT LEVEL) AND FIRE / RESCUE, AND PRO-BOARD TESTING FOR NATIONAL CERTIFICATION.

  • PASS A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK
  • POSSESS A VALID DRIVERS LICENSE
  • BE WILLING TO MAKE THE COMMITMENT TO GET THE TRAINING REQUIRED AND ANSWER ALARMS WHEN ABLE.

FIREFIGHTERS:  MEMBERS THAT WILL BE RESPONDING ON THE FIRE AND FIRE ALARM CALLS WE RECEIVE.  MAY NEED TO RESPOND ON THE FIRE ENGINE TO VEHICLE ACCIDENTS TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL PERSONNEL. 

EMS (AMBULANCE) RESPONDERS:  MEMBERS THAT WILL RESPOND TO THE CALLS FOR OUR AMBULANCE SERVICE INCLUDING VEHICLE ACCIDENTS.  EMS RESPONDERS ARE ALSO NEEDED TO RESPOND WITH THE AMBULANCE TO FIRE SCENES TO PROVIDE FIREFIGHTER REHAB AND BE PRESENT FOR ANY VICTIMS AT THE FIRE - BE IT CIVILIAN OR ONE OF THE FIRE FIGHTERS ON SCENE.

FIRE POLICE RESPONDERS:  MEMBERS THAT WILL RESPOND ON VEHICLE ACCIDENT AND FIRE CALLS TO PROVIDE TRAFFIC CONTROL AT THE SCENE OF THE EMERGENCY.  MEMBERS OF THIS DIVISION ALSO ARE CALLED OUT ON OCCASION TO PROVIDE TRAFFIC CONTROL WHEN THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH TRAFFIC LIGHTS OR WHEN THERE IS A HAZARD IN THE ROADWAY.  MEMBERS OF THIS SEGMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT USUALLY WILL DRIVE THEIR VEHICLE DIRECTLY TO THE SCENE.  ALL TRAFFIC CONTROL GEAR IS SUPPLIED BY THE DEPARTMENT.

RESCUE TECHNICIANS:  THESE MEMBERS WILL BE MEMBERS THAT RESPOND TO VEHICLE ACCIDENTS AS WELL AS ANY TYPE OF TECHNICAL RESCUE SITUATION WE GET CALLED TO SUCH AS CONFINED SPACE RESCUE, ROPE RESCUE, STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE RESCUE AND TRENCH RESCUE.  CURRENTLY WE HAVE LIMITED WATER RESCUE CAPABILITIES AND WILL SERVE IN A SUPPORT ROLL TO OTHER CERTIFIED WATER RESCUE AND DIVE RESCUE COMPANIES.  THESE POSITIONS ARE HIGH LEVEL POSITIONS THAT ARE USUALLY HELD BY MEMBERS THAT ARE ALSO FIREFIGHTERS OR EMS RESPONDERS.  MEMBERS FROM OTHER DEPARTMENTS THAT HAVE THE REQUIRED TRAINING ARE WELCOME TO JOIN OUR TEAM AS ALLIED MEMBERS.

OUR EXPECTATIONS ;  ATTEND THE WEEKLY TRAINING / DRILL NIGHTS (EVERY MONDAY 6PM TILL 10PM EXCEPT HOLIDAYS),  PUT FORTH THE EFFORT TO GET THE TRAINING REQUIRED, ANSWER A MINIMUM OF 15% OF CALLS EACH MONTH ( CURRENTLY 12 - 16 PER MONTH) ATTEND AND WORK AT OUR 6 FUND RAISING EVENTS ( 4 CHRISTMAS AUCTIONS, LADIES DAY OUT EVENT, COMEDY SHOW) HELP OUT AROUND THE FIRE STATION ON OCCASION TO CUT THE GRASS, PLOW THE PARKING LOTS, AND GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING DUTIES THAT GO ALONG WITH KEEPING THE DEPARTMENT RUNNING AND LOOKING NEAT.

BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP:   TRAINING THAT IS PAID FOR,  $5.00 STIPEND FOR EACH CALL ANSWERED TO COVER GAS AND MAINT. ON VEHICLE USED TO RESPOND TO THE STATION ON CALLS,  A $50,000 AD&D LIFE INSURANCE POLICY THAT COVERS MEMBERS 24 /7 / 365.  ON DUTY LIFE INSURANCE POLICY OF $250,000,  EXPERIENCE IN A BUSY DEPARTMENT WITH LOTS OF EMS ACTIVITY AND A LARGE NUMBER OF VEHICLE ACCIDENTS THAT CAN BE USED TO START A CAREER IN THE FIRE OR EMS SERVICES.  ALL THIS IN ADDITION TO THE SATISFACTION OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONES LIFE WHEN THEY NEED IT THE MOST.
